After becoming a monk at the Sivananda Ashram in Rishikesh, India, spiritual leader and yoga teacher Swami Vishnudevananda taught hatha yoga at the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Forest Academy. Later, Swami Vishnudevananda founded the network of International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres, which hosts educational courses, yoga retreats, and teacher trainings.
The longest-running and largest yoga teacher training program in the West, the Sivananda Yoga Teacher Training Course (TTC) teaches advanced yoga practitioners the skills to spread peace in the world through yoga instruction. Since 1969, the program has trained more than 50,000 individuals in the art and science of teaching yoga, focusing on a well-rounded yoga lifestyle that includes asana (yoga postures), pranayama (breathing exercises), and karma yoga (selfless service). Additionally, teacher training sessions address topics such as yogic diet and yoga anatomy and physiology, as well as the study of classic texts such as the Bhagavad Gita.
